The zirconia-alumina grain construction is more durable than standard aluminum oxide and cuts up to three times faster than fiber resin sanding discs. A Type 29 fiberglass backing supports grinding angles between 20 and 25 degrees, a setup well-suited for contour work and aggressive stock removal across multiple metal types. Carbon steels, aerospace alloys, nickel alloys, aluminum, and cast iron are all compatible substrates. The zirconia-alumina grains fracture during use to expose fresh cutting edges, so the disc maintains consistent cutting action throughout its working life.
