Despite the fact that it is not uncommon for amateurs to play badminton without a net, the official rules require one. The standard length of the net is about 6m to span the width of the court (5.18m for singles and 6.1m for doubles). There are no requirements for the width (height) of the net itself in the rules, only the standard height of its upper edge is indicated — 1.55 m; in fact, the width is usually about 60 – 80 cm.
