Surface grinders

 

— a specific type of grinding machine, originally designed for fairly large flat surfaces. A distinctive feature of such units is that an abrasive disc is used for processing, and the surface to be ground is not affected by the round surface of the disc, as in "ordinary" grinding machines (see the relevant paragraph), but by the edge, as in grinding machines. At the same time, the workpiece is held in a special mount, which allows it to be moved relative to a fixed disk. Note that surface grinders usually have fairly significant dimensions and weight and, in general, are more likely to be professional equipment.
