The "classic" of multi-channel sound is considered to be 5.1 format — two front channels, a centre channel and two rear channels plus a subwoofer. However, in modern sound projectors, more advanced options are often found — for example, 7.1 or even 9.1; the actual division by channels varies, often depending on the supported audio decoders.
In general, multi-channel devices are the most advanced, capable of delivering full-fledged surround sound by own means, without the use of virtual sound channels (see "Features— surround sound"). On the other hand, such functionality affects the price accordingly.
