Cascade
— a type of filter that attaches to the external wall of the aquarium. In their design, the container with the filtering cartridges is located outside the tank. Water from the aquarium flows into the container through an intake manifold, is filtered, and then drains back through a unique overflow that resembles a waterfall. This type of overflow creates a visually appealing flowing effect in the aquarium and minimizes internal currents, which is important for certain species of freshwater fish. The aeration in cascade filters is surface-based — the air is saturated with oxygen through the mixing of water and air as it passes over the "waterfall."
