The mullen mouth Pelham is one of the most basic Pelhams and is preferred over rubber or vulcanite Pelhams for horses with small mouths or large tongues. The curved mullen mouthpiece allows room for the tongue while distributing pressure evenly in the mouth. The Pelham was designed to be used with two reins, one attached to the top ring (snaffle) and the other attached to the bottom ring (curb), which is used when needed for extra leverage.It can also be used with rounding's attached to a single rein, so that the mouthpiece and bridle come into action at the same time. The small ring above the bridle is used for a lip strap which is not essential but is correct for showing and helps keep the curb chain flat.
