Bluetooth

Bluetooth technology is intended for direct wireless communication of electronic devices with each other at distances up to 10 m (in the new standards — up to 100 m). In FM transmitters, it is mainly used to receive audio from another Bluetooth device, such as a smartphone. Technically, other use cases (such as remote control) may be envisaged, but they are less common.

To connect an FM transmitter with various gadgets, a Bluetooth connection is more convenient than a wired connection, and not only because of the lack of wires: this technology is supported by a huge number of modern devices, while wired interface compatibility is much less common. On the other hand, the sound quality transmitted via Bluetooth may be lower than with a wired connection.

Hands free

The presence of a hands-free function in the FM transmitter.

The speakerphone implies the presence of Bluetooth (see the relevant paragraph) and allows you to conduct conversations by broadcasting the voice of the interlocutor through the car's speaker system. This is the best option for talking on the phone while driving — the phone does not need to be held in your hand, and the audibility is better than from the device's own speaker.

At the same time, it is worth noting that the presence of Bluetooth in the FM transmitter does not mean the presence of this function, it requires the presence of a microphone. However, there are also transmitters without a microphone. In one case, in order not to make the conversation public when there are other people in the salon; in the second case, for models without Bluetooth at all.

Card reader

A slot that allows you to install memory cards in the FM transmitter and play music from them. Most often, card readers are made for SD or microSD form factor cards; however, both varieties have several variations (SDHC, SDXC), so before using such a transmitter, it's ok to clarify which varieties the card reader is compatible with.

Max. memory card / flash drive capacity

The maximum size of a memory card or USB-drive (flash drive) supported by the transmitter.

For more information about memory cards and flash drives, see "Cart Reader" and "USB Input", respectively. Here we note that a modern FM transmitter can support two types of media at once; in such cases, the volume limit is often relevant for both flash drives and memory cards, but this nuance does not hurt to further clarify the documentation. Anyway, this limitation is primarily due to the fact that a higher storage capacity requires a more powerful hardware; in addition, there are nuances associated with individual subspecies of memory cards. Anyway, it is impossible to exceed the maximum allowable volume — this can lead to malfunctions and even to hardware breakdowns.

Charging port

The transmitter has a specialized USB port for charging smartphones, tablets and other external devices.

Note that you can also charge external devices from conventional USB connectors; however, specialized ports provide higher power output, which can significantly reduce charging time. It is also worth mentioning that the specific purpose of such a connector can be different: in some models it works only as a power source, in others it can also be used to connect USB drives. Many FM transmitters have two USB ports — regular and charging; this allows you to simultaneously charge an external gadget and listen to music from a USB flash drive. And in modern devices, the old USB A form factor is supplemented by a modern USB-C port.

24V support

Possibility of operation of the device with automobile networks with a voltage of 24 V.

Such tension is found in heavy equipment — in particular, buses and main tractors (“trucks”). By default, FM transmitters are usually made for the 12-volt on-board networks of cars; therefore, for installation in a 24-volt network, you need to choose a model where this possibility is directly stated.
