From the manufacturer's press release:
August 20, 2007: Canon introduces a digital SLR for advanced hobbyists and semi-professionals: the EOS 40D. With 10.1 mega pixel CMOS sensor, 6.5 frames per second speed, newly developed AF system and 3.0” LCD which displays Live View image.
The camera benefits from the new EOS technology platform previously introduced on the professional EOS-1D Mark III. Canon's DIGIC III processor provides us with fast performance, improved colour performance and near-instantaneous triggering. The integrated EOS cleaning system cleans up dust on the sensor, while the durable magnesium alloy weatherproof housing guarantees greater durability.
Image speed and quality:
The third generation of Canon CMOS sensors is an improvement over its predecessor that keeps noise to a minimum. The EOS 40D maintains high image quality up to ISO 1600, stretching up to 3200 for situations where flash is not permitted or desirable. Highlight tone priority mode allows wedding photographers and naturalists to increase the dynamic range of highlights above ISO 200 — reproducing more tonal transitions in wedding dresses, clouds and other bright subjects. The DIGIC III processor maintains a speed of 6.5 fps, working with an image buffer that can hold up to 75 large JPEGs (17 in RAW) without pause.
New Cross Type AF System:
The main improvement of the EOS 40D is the new 9-point cross-type AF system. All nine AF points can provide both horizontal and vertical focus. The centre AF point is capable of accurately focus apertures down to f/2.8, with eight outer AF points working up to f/5.6. A dedicated AF Start (AF-ON) button allows photographers to trigger autofocus with their thumb.
LCD with live view mode:
Live View mode makes it easy to shoot from awkward angles, such as ground-level macro shots or a tripod setup. The 3.0” LCD displays the Live View image in real time, including a selection of an overlay grid and a live histogram that simulates image exposure. The AF-ON button can be set to flip the camera's mirror back momentarily and trigger autofocus. For studio shooting, Remote Live View allows the photographer to compose and adjust settings, shoot from a PC using the included EOS utility software.
Presets:
Standard - for crisp, vibrant images that don't require post-processing
Portrait - optimizes hue and saturation and reduces sharpness to achieve attractive skin tones
Landscape - for rich greens and blues with increased sharpness to give crisp edges to mountains, trees and buildings
Neutral - perfect for post-processing
Accurate - adjusts colour to match the colour of an object shot at a colour temperature of 5200K
Monochrome - for black and white shooting to entire ranges of filters and tonal effects
