At the end of the summer of 2018, NVIDIA presented a new family of GeForce RTX 20xx video cards based on the Turing architecture, and six months later released a line of more affordable GeForce GTX 16xx cards based on the same architecture. The novelties turned out to be very successful and NVIDIA would have rested on its laurels in the camp if AMD/Radeon had not announced the new Radeon RX 5700, based on the advanced 7nm RDNA microarchitecture. Higher, faster, more powerful
These are essentially the same RTX 20 cards, but more powerful and in some cases even cheaper. For example, unlike the regular RTX 2070, built on the junior TU106 chip, the SUPER version is based on the older TU104, which was previously used only in the RTX 2080. The transition to the new graphics chip added stream processors, texture filtering units and tensor cores to the card. At the same time, the volume, type, frequency and video memory bus have not changed — all the same 8 GB GDDR6 with a frequency of 14000 MHz and a 256-bit bus. The frequency of the graphics core has also increased. In the case of the Palit variant, the figure is 1815 MHz.
Almost on par with RTX 2080
What did all these improvements give? A serious increase in muscle mass, which allowed the SUPER cards to almost jump to the next stage of evolution. For example, some RTX 2060 SUPERs are catching up with stock RTX 2070s in terms of power, and this particular model from Palit is only 7-8% behind the top-end RTX 2080. Moreover, this gap can be minimized through overclocking. In our tests, we managed to raise the dynamic core frequency to 1915 MHz, and the memory to 15304 MHz. The result is a 5% increase in overall performance (in games this is equivalent to a bonus of 4 – 14 FPS), an increase in power consumption to 353 W, strong cooler noise and overall performance is actually at the level of the RTX 2080. And the price is actually $ 200 less. With all that said, the Palit GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER JS can be forgiven for even a rather noisy cooler. In all other respects, this is a well-designed and well-equipped top-level graphics card.
