DJI in the world of quadcopters is like GoPro among action cameras: the Chinese manufacturer is actively introducing new technologies into drones, and the rest are equal to it.

Varieties

The DJI Phantom 3 line is available in three variations: Standard, Advanced and Professional. The first model is fundamentally different from older brothers and is aimed at amateur pilots. The other two varieties are tailored for professional use and differ only in the capabilities of the complete camera.

Camera

The model with the Professional index is equipped with a 12-megapixel Sony EXMOR module, which does a very good job of recording UltraHD video. He writes videos in 4K format at speeds up to 30 fps and bitrates up to 60 Mbps. The lens aperture can be opened up to f/2.8 and its field of view is 94°(20mm in 35mm equivalent).

Flight

The quadcopter has an increased flight range: the instruction guarantees effective control at a distance of up to 2 km. But in reality, some specimens flew away from their owners for 5-7 km, after which they returned safely. The function of automatic return to the starting point is responsible for this, which is activated when the battery level is critical or communication with the remote control is lost. The ceiling of the copter is limited to a height of 6000 m above sea level.

Sensors

The body of the aircraft is stuffed to the eyeballs with all sorts of sensors. It has a 6-axis gyroscope, accelerometer, barometer, compass and even an ultrasound generator on board, which collects data on surrounding objects and, in which case, will help to fly around a sudden obstacle. Numerous sensors makes it easy to fly indoors and virtually eliminates the possibility of an unsuccessful drone landing.

Software Features

Also, the copter has in its arsenal a whole galaxy of software "gadgets". For example, the Follow me function allows you to automatically follow the subject of shooting, and Point of Interest fixes the camera on a specific object with manual flight control. Another important software feature is the ability to stream HD video directly to YouTube.

battery life

The real operating time on one battery charge almost completely coincides with the claimed one and is 20-23 minutes. A set of spare batteries will allow you to shoot longer. And an additional suspension for action cameras will make it possible to install a cooler camera on board the copter. However there are not so many devices that can claim this role, since the complete camera itself is very good (although it does not record sound). One of these options is the Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera, a top-of-the-line device with interchangeable lenses and a Micro 4/3 mount.

Additional features drone DJI Phantom 3 Professional:
  • Flight Information Recording
  • The transmitter has USB / Mini-HDMI outputs for connecting a monitor or tablet
Camera Features:
  • Matrix — Sony EXMOR 1/2.3"
  • Aperture — f / 2.8
  • Camera light sensitivity (ISO) — 100-3200 (video), 100-1600 (photo)
  • Exposure — 8s -1/8000s
  • Interval shooting
  • Continuous shooting — 3, 5 or 7 fps
  • Auto exposure bracketing (AEB) — 3/5
  • Exposure compensation — 0.7EV
Video recording:
  • UHD — 4096x2160p (24/25fps), 3840x2160p (24/25/30fps)
  • FHD — 1920x1080p (24/25/30/48/50/60 fps)
  • HD — 1280x720p (24/25/30/48/50/60 fps)
Main differences between DJI Phantom 2 and Phantom 3:
  • All Phantom 3 models, first of all, are distinguished by a new GPS module, in particular the "Follow me" mode (the drone can follow your smartphone equipped with a GPS receiver). The second feature of the new Phantom is the ability to view live video in 720p quality!
Model modifications:
  • The Phantom 3 Professional model has a GPS module with GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System) support. With the help of visual and ultrasonic sensors, the quadcopter determines its position for flight safety even indoors. The camera can record video in UHD 4K (4096x2160p) at 25 fps
  • The Phantom 3 Advanced model has a GPS module with GLONASS (Global Navigation Satellite System) support. Using visual and ultrasonic sensors, the quadcopter determines its position for flight safety even indoors. Camera can record video in FHD (1920x1080p) at 60 fps
  • The Phantom 3 Standard model differs from its two older brothers Phantom 3 Professional and Phantom 3 Advanced in a weaker GPS module (no GLONASS and optical system for indoor flights), as well as a reduced flight radius and live video broadcast. Camera can record video in UHD 2.7K (2704x1520p) at 30 fps
