From the manufacturer's press release:

"Canon introduces the latest solution for amateur photographers who value elegance and style with the Digital IXUS 850 IS. The new 7.1-megapixel camera is the first model in the Digital IXUS series to feature a 28mm 3.8x wide-angle zoom lens ( 35mm film equivalent) with Optical Image Stabilizer.

The ultra-compact Digital IXUS 850 IS camera, whose performance will be appreciated by true professionals, retains the characteristic design features of the series - smooth curves of the body and all-metal finish. Canon's latest DIGIC III processor delivers improved performance and superb image quality. It also reduces noise when shooting at ISO 1600 equivalent and introduces a new face detection feature for AF/AE correction (Canon Face Detection AF/AE). It detects up to nine human faces in the frame and automatically optimizes focus and exposure settings for dramatic group portraits.

“The latest addition to the Digital IXUS family of cameras is a perfect example of the long journey we've made since we launched our first analogue IXUS camera in 1996,” said Mr. Mogens Jensen, Canon Consumer Business Leader. imaging in Europe. “This Digital IXUS series camera has a number of innovations that amateur photographers are sure to love. These include a wide-angle lens, DIGIC III processor, and face detection for AF/AE correction.”

The Digital IXUS 850 IS features a 3.8x optical zoom lens with a focal length range of 28-105mm (35mm film equivalent) allowing the photographer to capture wider panoramas, architectural structures and group portraits. This lens is also equipped with Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer, which compensates for the effects caused by camera shake for greater image stability when shooting at full zoom in low light conditions or when shooting out of a car window.

High image quality

The 7.1 megapixel image sensor captures the finest details of objects, allowing you to create high-quality large-format prints. To take full advantage of high resolution, the photographer can use the Safety Zoom function to increase the zoom range without compromising image quality, up to 15x zoom when shooting small images.

New DIGIC III Processor with Face Detection for AF/AE Correction

The new DIGIC III processor, which provides high sensitivity and performance of the camera, as well as high-quality image processing, is equipped with a unique face detection function (Face Detection AF / AE). This feature automatically detects people's faces in the frame and optimizes focus and exposure settings to ensure portrait shots are clear and bright. When the main subject in the frame is not a person, it automatically activates the 9-point Intelligent AF (AiAF) system to avoid focus errors when shooting landmarks or places where many people visit. The face detection function for AF/AE correction is effective when taking pictures of large groups of people, including those at a considerable distance or moving in the frame. This feature is software-based and therefore operates at the same speed as Canon's standard Intelligent AF system.

Shooting modes and My Colours

17 modes are suitable for shooting in almost any situation and include a new mode for shooting special scenes "aquarium". A fully manual mode for selecting exposure settings such as white balance and ISO sensitivity is made even easier with a dedicated ISO sensitivity button. For in-camera creative work, My Colours effects can be applied during or after shooting. The new My Category feature simplifies image management by automatically sorting images into categories such as people, scenery, or events based on face detection results and the selected shooting mode.

The video clip recording function allows you to record VGA (30 frames per second) video images with sound. Canon's unique Intelligent Orientation Sensor automatically rotates the video image for easy viewing in the camera, for downloading to a PC or playback on a TV via the built-in AV output.

Advanced LCD screen

The bright 2.5-inch LCD screen on the Digital IXUS 850 IS, with a wide viewing angle, makes it easy to frame and review images. The 207,000 pixel resolution allows users to take advantage of the new Image Inspection Tool immediately after shooting, displaying a magnified image area next to each image being viewed. The zoomed area can be moved between AF points or anywhere else in the frame, allowing users to control the sharpness of faces or expressions before moving on to another scene. The ability to select a template with a 3:2 aspect ratio allows you to view the area reproduced in standard photos. The user interface has also been improved to provide additional ease of navigation between related camera settings. The optical real image viewfinder allows you to compose your shots with high precision without using the LCD screen. This is especially useful when shooting in difficult lighting conditions or low battery life."
