Quick The disk didn't last even a month. It might be defective, but I returned it under warranty. |
The Missing Link in Evolution
ADATA Ultimate SU900 represents a new generation of mid-range SSDs based on 3D MLC memory, positioned between cheap TLC drives and expensive planar MLC. The SU900 is significantly more reliable than the former but slightly slower than the latter.
Writing Unstoppably
For PC users who frequently rewrite large amounts of data on the drive, such as gamers and video editors, the resources of triple-bit TLC memory will evidently not last long enough. It is better to pay a little extra for an SSD with MLC memory, which writes only two bits of data per cell and thus guarantees three times more rewrite cycles (3000 compared to 1000 for TLC).
Fast Only Halfway
The ADATA Ultimate SU900 uses 3D MLC flash memory manufactured by Micron. Unlike Toshiba's planar MLC memory with a constant writing speed, it tends to slow down when writing large files (from 520 to 120 MB/s). The issue is solved in the same way as with TLC drives — with a software SLC cache. Fortunately, in the case of 3D MLC and the smart controller SMI SM2258, the size of the cache is half of the free space on the drive. Therefore, the chance of encountering a drop in speed, if you don't fully "load" the SSD, tends to zero. If high reading speed (560 MB/s) and durability (as confirmed by a 5-year warranty) are most important to you, then confidently choose the ADATA Ultimate SU900. However, if you want an SSD with consistently high writing speed, consider alternatives: Kingston HyperX Savage or Samsung 850 Pro.
