How to choose a gaming headphoneWe understand the differences between regular and gaming headphones, tell you how to approach the choice of a headset wisely

The Sony logo on electronics is a hallmark of quality products that you can purchase without hesitation. The Sony MDR-ZX770BN headphones are no exception.

Design and Ergonomics

The model is available in two colors: black and blue. It looks understated, without frills. It fits snugly and securely on the head. The steel slider on the headband allows for easy adjustment of the position of the cups, which, by the way, are also rotatable.

«Sound Enhancers»

The model is versatile. It is both a headset for phone calls and wireless headphones with good sound quality across the full frequency range of 8 – 22000 Hz. However, using them right out of the box, you start to doubt the sound quality. But this is only because the aptX codec is disabled by default. Enabling it is not easy, you’ll have to perform a few tricks to get it working. Once enabled, the sound quality noticeably improves, provided your smartphone or laptop supports the aptX standard.

Caring for its users, Sony has not overlooked the many Apple device owners who listen to music on iTunes. The AAC format is supported by the headphones.

Besides wireless connection, the MDR-ZX770BN can also be listened to via a cable. It is detachable, 1.2 m long, and comes included. It’s best to have it on hand in case the battery runs out. This will happen after 10 – 13 hours of listening with ANC enabled. Charging will take, on average, 2 hours.

As for the «noise cancelling», it is, to put it mildly, rather weak. It only removes surrounding sounds by 30 – 40%. For example, a loud conversation nearby is heard distinctly, though muffled, and a monotonous hum does not disappear but seems more smoothed. Noise cancellation can be manually turned off, but every time the headphones restart, it will automatically turn on again.

Control

All connectors and controls are located on the lower rims of the cups, and once you get used to where everything is positioned, you quickly get oriented in managing them. What do we have «on board»? Buttons: power, mode switching «talk-pause-skip», noise cancellation; status indicator, volume control up to 100 dB, microUSB charging ports, and mini-Jack for audio cable. There's even a RESET in case the wireless connection completely freezes.

In addition to Bluetooth, the model supports NFC, as indicated by the respective icon on the outside of the cups. To ensure the headphones remain functional, do not gather dust, and maintain their aesthetic look for a long time, a soft drawstring case is included.

Considering all the pros and cons of the Sony MDR-ZX770BN, they can be called quite good in terms of balance between sound quality, ergonomics, and price (around 250 USD). However, those who expect really good noise cancellation, rather than just for show, might want to look for another model.

Battery life:
  • 19 hours — with noise reduction off
  • 24 hours — with noise reduction on and wired connection
