From the manufacturer's press release:

The EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM is a new zoom tele/photo lens. With the use of a new 3-layer diffractive optical element (DO), Canon has been able to create a lens with a focal length range of 70-300mm, with a length not exceeding 10cm. In addition, the lens uses Canon's Image Stabilization (IS) technology, which drastically reduces the impact of camera shake and allows you to increase the shutter speed by about three stops without noticeably increasing the blurring of the image. And a near-silent ultrasonic motor (USM) delivers extremely fast autofocus. The lens is equipped with a full-time manual focus system, a round aperture aperture and a zoom ring lock mechanism that allows you to fix the lens setting to the shortest focal length. In terms of image quality, this model approaches Canon's professional L-series lenses. The model will appeal to professional photojournalists and experienced amateur photographers, relieving them of the need to carry numerous and bulky equipment.

Diffractive Optical Elements (DO)

This is the first DO lens produced by the company since the introduction of the award-winning Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM lens, which has become a real eye-catcher for photographers. The new lens is approximately 26% shorter and 36% lighter than its closest competitor. The use of a new three-layer optical element (DO) made it possible to significantly reduce the length and weight of the system as a whole, as well as increase the refractive power of each lens and reduce the distance between the elements. Chromatic aberrations, usually unavoidable with compact lenses, can be corrected with a front-facing three-coated DO lens. This, and the correction of spherical aberrations through the use of aspherical elements, brings the new model closer in image quality, resolution and contrast to Canon's legendary L-series lenses.

Zoom ring lock

The EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM has a zoom ring lock mechanism that locks the lens to the shortest focal length. This protects the lens from possible damage due to the extension of its elements under the force of its own weight, especially when the camera with the lens hangs freely on the belt.

Image stabilization

The lens incorporates Canon's renowned Image Stabilization (IS) technology, allowing approximately three stops of faster shutter speed without any noticeable increase in image blur when shooting static subjects or panoramas. This greatly expands the range of situations in which you can shoot handheld, without the need to carry a tripod. If you continue to move the camera in one direction for a certain amount of time, the Image Stabilizer in Mode 2 automatically detects that it is purposeful panning and stops correcting in that direction to prevent stray vibrations. To avoid tripod shooting errors, the system automatically detects the absence of movement/vibration. The efficiency of the IS system and the reduction in overall size have been improved by improving the moving contacts between the coil and IS lenses, the IS lens array locking mechanism, and the gyro-shake sensors.

Fast autofocus

A ring-type ultrasonic motor (USM) with rear focus elements and a high-speed CPU, combined with the new autofocus algorithms provided in this model, provide extremely fast autofocus. The ring-type ultrasonic motor (USM) converts ultrasonic vibration energy into rotational force for high-speed, high-precision, ultra-efficient and near-silent autofocusing. At the same time, the inertialess motor provides a fast and accurate response. The lens is equipped with an always-on manual focus system, which allows you to instantly switch to manual mode without the risk of damaging the autofocus mechanism. The minimum focus distance across the entire zoom range is just 1.4m.

Perfect for digital photography

In order to suppress ghosting and flare in the image, the shape of the lens elements has been improved, and additional layers have appeared in their coating. This makes the new lens perfect for digital cameras, which are more sensitive to light reflections from the image sensor than film cameras. When used on digital cameras with an APS-C size sensor, such as the EOS 10D, the focal length range (35mm film equivalent) will be 112-480mm.

High optical precision – high image quality

A well-chosen combination of refractive and diffractive optical elements provides high resolution over the entire image area at any focal length. Like all other EF lenses, the new model is equipped with an electromagnetic diaphragm (EMD) that operates quickly, silently and very accurately. Thanks to the round aperture, the aperture can create an attractive background blur effect.

Use with EOS cameras

The lens has been carefully designed to match the latest EOS cameras, to take full advantage of its fast performance. The lens comes with an LP1116 case and an exclusive ET-65B lens hood to protect it from unwanted direct light.

In harmony with the environment

In full compliance with Canon's high environmental standards, all optical elements of the lens are made of lead-free glass.
