Universal NVMe drive with PCI-E 4.0 support

At the end of 2021, Taiwanese brand A-Data announced a major update to its SSD range. In addition to the original gaming lines XPG Gammix and XPG Spectrix, universal drives of the Legend series were released with good speed performance and a minimalist design. And if younger Legends are somewhere in the middle between the primary and middle class, then the advanced A-Data LEGEND 840 will equally well come in handy as a boot disk, and to expand the memory of a workstation, and as an additional drive for a game console.

Most Affordable PS5 SSD

A-Data LEGEND 840 is a familiar M.2 2280 format drive that uses 4 lanes of PCIe Gen4 interface and complies with NVMe 1.4 specifications. The maximum read and write speeds of the drive are 5000 and 4750 Mb / s, read IOPS reaches 650K, and there is a full-fledged SLC cache on board to reduce drawdowns when transferring large amounts of data. In general, it does not look like a record, but it was just enough to pass Sony's strict selection and receive the official status of "Ready to work with PlayStation 5". But the price is nowhere lower - a 1 TB model with due luck can be bought for $ 150 – 160, which makes it one of the most affordable SSD paired with PS5.

Memory controller Innogrit IG5220

In general, the price is the main advantage of the LEGEND 840 drive. Because in real use cases it is still inferior to proven drives from Samsung, Kingston and Gigabyte. Despite the claimed SLC cache and 8-channel controller, A-Data decided to save on matches and instead of proven products from Phison or SM, they trusted a newcomer - the Chinese manufacturer Innogrit. And this has led to the fact that for some users with motherboards two / three years ago, it is simply not detected by the system. Therefore, before buying, we recommend that you look at the official page of your motherboard and make sure that everything fits. Well, it is not entirely clear how it will behave over time.
