Silicon Power P34A80 M.2 SP256GBP34A80M28 256 GB
Videos 6Photos 2 | Outdated Product $65.91 The youngest model from the family of high-performance M.2 (PCI-E 4x) SSDs in the M.2 2280 form factor. Designed to equip mid-range, high-end and premium personal computers, laptops and workstations. It features impressive I/O performance (390,000/450,000 IOPS), high read/write speed (3400/3000 Mbps), and fast random block access time. Positioned as a product of the middle price category of the 2019 model year. The Silicon Power P34A80 M.2 SP256GBP34A80M28 SSD is based on the advanced Phison PS5012-E12-27 eight-channel controller, working with a 256MB DDR4 DRAM buffer. High-quality 64-layer 3D TLC BiCS3 NAND flash memory manufactured by Toshiba was used for data storage. For the full operation of the device, a motherboard with an M.2 connector that supports the PCI-E 3.0 x4 (NVMe 1.3) inte...rface is required. The controller supports high-speed SLC write caching technology up to 8 GB, which guarantees excellent performance of the drive as a system drive and other typical home and professional use scenarios. Unlike HDD drives, this model has a high impact resistance. The manufacturer does not declare a guaranteed recording resource, but provides the device with a proprietary 5-year warranty. |

New Phison Controller
Silicon Power P34A80 is based on the PS5012-E12 controller, Phison's first brainchild for the NVMe SSD segment, in which not only the price turned out to be attractive. It is based on a dual-core ARM processor with a frequency of 667 MHz, offers eight channels for connecting flash memory, supports four PCI Express 3.0 lanes, and is also equipped with a DDR4 / DDR3L interface for implementing an internal buffer. In terms of internal architecture, it has come close to modern controllers from first-tier brands and, as tests have shown, has become noticeably faster than previous solutions from the company.
4 to 5 times faster than regular SSD
What does all this promise potential buyers? On the one hand, this allowed us to keep the price as low as possible. In fact, Silicon Power P34A80 is the most affordable NVMe SSD with a full configuration (DRAM buffer + three-bit memory). Of the NVMe SSDs, either drives based on QLC 3D NAND memory or bufferless SSDs will be cheaper. On the other hand, there are many reservations regarding the passport data of the drive. For example, the external speed for both reading and writing in CrystalDiskMark was much lower than stated. For read operations, instead of 3400 MB / s, the benchmark showed 2156 MB / s. With external recording, instead of 3000 MB / s, we got 2123 MB / s. On the one hand, this seems to be a minus, on the other hand, even taking into account such “unreliability”, the external speed of the Silicon Power P34A80 turns out to be higher than that of NVMe competitors based on inexpensive controllers from Silicon Motion.
Capacious SLC cache
Among other advantages of the model, we note a capacious SLC cache with a write speed of 2000 MB / s, no freezes after deleting large files, and moderate speed drops when copying large files in steady state. In this case, stable 600 MB / s come out, which cannot be called low speed. The main thing when buying, pay attention to the location of the M.2 port on your motherboard — if it does not have cooling, and the slot itself is located close to the graphics card, then the Silicon Power P34A80 may be too hot. Fortunately, the manufacturer provides the device with a proprietary 5-year warranty.
