The Patriot Viper VP4100 is the fastest SSD to date. Or rather, one of the fastest, since all PCI-E 4.0 SSDs currently available for sale are built on the same controller — Phison E16. While drives with other PCI-E 4.0 controllers (Silicon Motion SM2264, SM2267 and InnoGrit Rainier IG5236) still exist only on paper.

Lives up to expectations

What is the pioneering Phison E16? This controller has two ARM Cortex R5 cores and eight channels of flash memory. Its peak sequential read and write speeds are 5000 and 4400 MB / s, respectively, and the random read-write rate is 800K IOPS (input-output operations per second). Exactly the same speed is produced by the Patriot Viper VP4100 drive, that is, it works at the limit of the controller's capabilities.

On one side of the Viper VP4100 PCB are two Toshiba BiCS4 96-layer 3D TLC flash memory chips, one 512MB Hynix DDR4-2400 buffer chip, and the aforementioned E16 controller. On the opposite side, there are a couple more flash memory chips and another RAM cache chip (1 GB in total). From the side of the controller, a ribbed aluminium heatsink is glued to the SSD on thermal pads. Considering that even after long tests the temperature did not exceed 60 °C, it handles with its task perfectly.

Purchase for years

In general, the Patriot Viper VP4100 one hundred percent justifies in fact its honorary title of the fastest SSD on the market. In addition, Patriot SSDs traditionally have one of the largest rewrite resources — 1800 TB for the Viper VP4100 terabyte version (and 3600 TB for the 2 TB version). It's a pity that so far only motherboards with AMD X570 and TRX40 chipsets can unlock the potential of PCI-E 4.0 SSDs. While Intel is still dragging its feet on introducing this high-speed interface, even upcoming motherboards with the Z490 chipset won't get it. However, good-quality PCI-E 3.0 drives are also available in the Patriot Viper assortment: VPN100 and VPR100.
