The first swallow from Redmi
In addition to its super-popular smartphones, the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi has also released a pretty good collection of laptops over the past couple of years. Recently, the subsidiary brand Redmi, which previously performed mainly on smartphones, has also taken up laptops.
Top for your money
Interestingly, unlike its always inexpensive smartphones, the RedmiBook 14 laptop looks solid in all respects and stands at the level of the best mid-range models. It is small, performant, with excellent cooling, real 8 hours of operation (11 according to the passport) from a single charge and fast charging. It has a quite high-quality 14-inch IPS-display, which produces a rather juicy picture by the standards of this class. High contrast can be attributed to the advantages of the display, but the high minimum brightness can interfere with working in the dark.
Core i5 based
At its heart is an eighth-generation quad-core Core i5 with multi-threading support and auto-overclocking up to 3.9 GHz. This is a proven option that is often found in models under $800. Complementing it are the same familiar 8 GB of RAM and a capacious 512 GB SSD. More than enough performance for everyday, office tasks. At the same time, the NVIDIA GeForce MX250 graphics card will allow you to comfortably play games of the caliber of FIFA 20 or Dirt Rally 2.0. In both cases, you can count on a stable 30 FPS at medium graphics settings.
Stylish and slim metal body
Pleasantly surprised by the case design and build quality. The silver cover looks expensive, and the “Redmi” and “Designed by Xiaomi” logos embroidered in grey letters indicate that the Chinese have crystallized their own vision of design, which they are now proud of. Previously, there were barely noticeable logos and exactly the same design as Apple, so that they could be accidentally confused. Although, whatever you write here, the laptop will still be compared with Xiaomi Mi Laptop Air and the old Apple MacBook Pro. If you are not embarrassed by such "borrowings", then this moderately stylish, thin and all-metal baby will definitely appeal to you.
Without webcam and USB-C
Against the background of all this, the keyboard caused mixed feelings. It is definitely good for its class of laptops, but the feeling of low-cost does not leave. Despite the low-profile shape of the keys, similar to the MacBook, they feel completely different and, subjectively, not in favor of Redmi. It also seems a strange decision to us to abandon the webcam. For some reason, Xiaomi decided that you don't need it. Well, or they are so strangely taken care of the privacy of users. The same goes for the USB-C port, instead of it there are only three regular USBs. If you are not embarrassed by such trifles, then RedmiBook 14 will be an excellent candidate for a purchase, it will be damn difficult to find a model with such hardware, in a thin (18 mm) metal case for less than $800.
