My mirror light

The T-Force Delta S TUF Gaming RGB SSD is one of the first SSDs on the market to feature the trendy RGB backlight. Neither the SATA nor the PCI-E bus can yet synchronize the backlight from the motherboard, so for this task you have to use additional wiring 5050_12V. Be sure to check if your motherboard has the correct connector (some models only have a 5V RGB connector).

Two boards inside

RGB aside, the Delta S TUF Gaming is a classic 2.5-inch SATA3 SSD. Inside, in addition to a small printed circuit board with LEDs, there is another large one: with a Silicon Motion SMI2258 controller, Micron 3D TLC flash memory chips and a separate RAM cache chip (it is absent in the cheapest SSDs). However the two-board design negatively affects the temperature of the disk, which is 10 degrees higher than single-board analogs (even the metal case does not save), although the temperature still cannot be called high.

Smart caching

All this combined results in 560 MB / s (the practical maximum bandwidth of the SATA3 bus) sequential read and 515 MB / s write. However after overflowing the virtual SLC cache, equal to about a third of the free disk space (typical for all TLC SSDs on an SMI controller), the write speed drops by about half — 220 MB / s. But anyway, this is better than SSDs based on planar TLC Toshiba memory, which sag to 50 – 100 MB / s.

Looking forward to big changes

As a result, the T-Force Delta S TUF Gaming RGB SSD is a successful attempt to introduce something new (if not internal functionality, then at least a spectacular appearance) into 2.5-inch SSDs that have not changed for several years. But the real revolution in this field will begin very soon with the introduction of QLC memory (four bits per cell), which should reduce the cost of SSD by a third.
