A line of 3.5″ format server HDDs from the American manufacturer Western Digital. They are part of the specialized WD Red server series, belong to the upper price range, and are focused on round-the-clock operation in home and office NAS servers. They are fundamentally different from the usual HDDs: inert helium is pumped inside the sealed case, and the lid is soldered to the base by a laser, which largely increases the resistance of the drive to heat and vibration. It has low power consumption and produces a minimum of noise during operation. Built-in NASware technologies enhance the compatibility of WD Red drives with a home or office network that is connected to multiple PCs, laptops, smartphones, TVs, and other Wi-Fi-enabled equipment. The series is represented by drives with a volume...of 1 to 6 TB. All of them are made in a 3.5-inch form factor, use a standard SATA connection and are compatible with almost most consumer and commercial NAS systems. Characterized by an extended working life (approx: up to 600,000 on-off cycles). Depending on the specific model, the type of magnetic recording may differ: 3, 4 and 6 TB HDDs use tiled SMR recording, the rest of the drives use the more familiar and reliable CMR magnetic recording. The key difference from other drives of the company is the built-in tools for optimizing work as part of a server shelf. The RAFF adaptive compensation system with a double-sided shaft and 3D balancing eliminates the negative effects of vibration, making it possible to install up to 8 drives in a rack without problems. Heads are parked only when the power is turned off, so that the drive continues to work even in standby mode. And TLER support allows you to postpone the correction of bad sectors until the next downtime. All this allows us to consider the WD NasWare Red WD40EFAX not only as an optimal drive for a NAS server, but also as a reliable storage in a gaming system, multimedia PC or workstation.

Model overview based on user reviews
The WD NasWare Red series is highly regarded for its quiet operation, reliability, and suitability for NAS systems. Users appreciate the cool and efficient performance of models like the 2TB and 4TB, although the 8TB model is noted to be audibly louder and warmer. The drives are praised for their fast access times and low energy consumption, making them ideal for continuous use in NAS environments. However, some users express concerns about the helium technology in larger models, which may affect long-term reliability. Overall, the WD NasWare Red is considered a reliable choice for data storage, especially in NAS setups, with a few users experiencing issues with specific models, but most reporting positive long-term performance.

No
The larger the volume, the more noise, heat, and less reliability.

2TB model - quiet, cool, reliable, 10 units in operation - 2 have already accumulated over 20,000 hours, the entire surface of the disks is good, with fast access time
4TB model - quiet in standby, barely audible in operation, warm
8TB model - quiet in standby, clearly audible in operation, hot up to 52 degrees
2TB model - quiet, cool, reliable
4TB model - quiet in standby, slightly audible in operation, warm
8TB model - quiet in standby, clearly audible in operation, fast
8TB model and above - the main drawback is helium, it is not eternal and constantly dissipates through the case. Unsuitable for "eternal" storage.
Happy with my choice

good quality product
I think the main advantage is that it is optimized for consumer NAS. They behave normally at work and remain cool. This is a very good indicator. This model is cheaper than buying the RE series. They are more reliable in operation than desktop models.
