A line of 3.5″ format server HDDs from the American manufacturer Western Digital. They are part of the specialized WD Red server series, belong to the upper price range, and are focused on round-the-clock operation in home and office NAS servers. They are fundamentally different from the usual HDDs: inert helium is pumped inside the sealed case, and the lid is soldered to the base by a laser, which largely increases the resistance of the drive to heat and vibration.

It has low power consumption and produces a minimum of noise during operation. Built-in NASware technologies enhance the compatibility of WD Red drives with a home or office network that is connected to multiple PCs, laptops, smartphones, TVs, and other Wi-Fi-enabled equipment. The series is represented by drives with a volume of 1 to 6 TB. All of them are made in a 3.5-inch form factor, use a standard SATA connection and are compatible with almost most consumer and commercial NAS systems.

Characterized by an extended working life (approx: up to 600,000 on-off cycles). Depending on the specific model, the type of magnetic recording may differ: 3, 4 and 6 TB HDDs use tiled SMR recording, the rest of the drives use the more familiar and reliable CMR magnetic recording. The key difference from other drives of the company is the built-in tools for optimizing work as part of a server shelf.

The RAFF adaptive compensation system with a double-sided shaft and 3D balancing eliminates the negative effects of vibration, making it possible to install up to 8 drives in a rack without problems. Heads are parked only when the power is turned off, so that the drive continues to work even in standby mode. And TLER support allows you to postpone the correction of bad sectors until the next downtime.
