Knight's Move by Fostex
In the minds of many music lovers, the Japanese manufacturer Fostex is associated with sophisticated planar magnetic headphones that stand out for their reasonable price and not the most pleasant analytical sound for the ear. But at the NAMM 2017 exhibition, the brand's representatives made a knight's move and presented to the public inexpensive universal headphones TH7, which used dynamic drivers, and the well-known design was suddenly modernized and became brighter.
U - universalism
The main thing that captivates in TH7 is their versatility. For example, one review will praise their honest, monitor sound for reasonable money. In another, the author will admire their unpretentiousness, saying that they sound cool even with a mediocre smartphone. Some even recommend them as DJ headphones, although this is completely debatable. We don’t know how they did it, but based on test listening, there was a strong feeling that they retained the smooth frequency response of planar models and enriched it with the energy of dynamic drivers. They are especially good with modern pop music, hip-hop and EDM: despite the closed design, the bass is clearly defined, the midrange is well detailed, and the highs sound clear and perky. There is a slight hump around 13,000 Hz, but it mostly shows up on recordings with a lot of hissing and sibilant overtones, like old jazz tunes from the 60s. Overall, we liked the TH-7 much more than the planar T20RPmkIII, whose honesty made our ears curl up into a tube.
Colours for every taste
Often manufacturers try to attract attention with extremely advanced functionality, Fostex TH7 are the complete opposite of the idea of "everything and more". They have an extremely simple design and are designed without unnecessary pretentiousness, but at the same time they cope with their main purpose of playing music at the level of much more expensive models. Oh yeah, one of the interesting features was the release in four different colors at once. Working with an eye on youth is not typical for professional audio brands, but it seems that Fostex managed to hit the mark.
