Inexpensive mechanics

A strong polarity is visible to the naked eye in the environment of gaming keyboards — on the one hand, there are affordable membrane keyboards, on the other, expensive, heavy and fancy mechanical keyboards, designed for hardcore players and e-sportsmen, rise. Occasionally curious hybrid models try to squeeze in between them, the creators of which had to be cunning in every possible way in the name of economy.

Cougar's own switches

Cougar Ultimus RGB is one of those. This is a rather massive and heavy mechanical model of the Skeleton format, which is traditionally made of a massive metal plate, on top of which the keys are strung. It is assembled to the conscience, the desire to swear and spit does not arise even if you have just moved to it with a conditional Razer BlackWidow Elite. So what's so special about her? Firstly, this is the visual design of the case in the style of World Of Tanks. Fans will certainly appreciate it, everyone else will miss the box office. Secondly, these are Blue switches of our own production. According to the claimed characteristics, they almost 1-in-1 correspond to switches from Cherry (only the activation point is 0.2 mm further), but in reality they feel differently. Not better or worse, but different. The force of pressing is especially different. Therefore, if you already had mechanical keyboards with switches from Cherry, you will have to get used to it. But after the usual "membranch" the feeling is just fabulous.

Quick backlight settings directly from the keyboard

In terms of additional functions, everything is standard: there is a game mode, full-fledged NKRO integration and a braided cable. But the RGB lighting is impressive even in comparison with much more expensive models. It is individual for each key, supports 14 different effects and is quickly configured using the Fn + Ins / Del / arrow block keyboard shortcut. It also allows you to adjust the brightness and create your own lighting effect by crossing several different ones. In fact, they frankly saved here only on a set of software for configuring the keyboard. This is never a command centre like HP or Razer, but rather a driver with a couple of additional options. If you need to quickly connect and play, then this is great. If you need total customization, then this, alas, is not.
