Successful continuation of tradition
Acoustic systems of the British company ProAc Response D20R have become a successful continuation of the popular Response D18. In fact, this is the same tweeter-midbass pair, but with improved high frequencies. If the D18 has a 19mm silk dome tweeter, then the D20R has a ribbon tweeter, previously considered an attribute only of the older ProAc Carbon Pro and Response D40R models. Let's see how good the $4500 D20R is.
More good sound
The system plays in the range of 28 – 33000 Hz with a sensitivity of 88.5 dB. The recommended amplifier power is 20 – 180 watts. And what the sound will be, largely depends on it. On transistor amplifiers, attacking styles with high dynamics of electric instruments will be better revealed, and on tube — acoustic and vocal performances. In general, the sound of the Response D20R can be described as follows: excellent open and extensive mids, assertive bass, pleasant and detailed highs, and a voluminous sound stage.
Timeless British elegance
In appearance, the D20R demonstrates exemplary classic British Hi-End style. The MDF cabinet construction features high damping properties and a quality veneer finish. The colour scheme is impressive: black ash, maple, mahogany, cherry, yew, ebony, bird's eye maple.
The 26 kg speakers are stable on the floor and do not give in to vibrations even at high power. The phase inverter directed to the floor provides a voluminous output palette of bottoms. Although in fairness, many fans of a pronounced bass section will miss it here. Nevertheless, the absence of a woofer affects how well a 165 mm midbass would not do its job.
ProAc Response D20R will undoubtedly attract fans of high aesthetics and corporate British style. Those who focus more on sound quality are unlikely to give preference to them as the main speakers for the claimed price tag.
