At first glance, even before the sound is turned on, it is extremely difficult to say why two such compact (39x22x25 cm) and light (8.5 kg) speakers with a total power of 120 W cost almost $ 1,100. We decided to sort it out.
Let's start with appearance. The form factor of the cabinets is quite elegant, slight rounding of the front panel and the case slightly tapering towards the rear wall provide not only beauty and originality of appearance, but also additional strength. I also liked the abundance of colour combinations: white and black lacquer, black lacquer with side walls made of laminated MDF in dark walnut colour or natural walnut veneer. In general, there are plenty to choose from.
musical duet
The price began to seem more justified after a detailed study of the speakers and their sound. The Flax 3-layer 165mm woofer/midrange cone is made of cellulose, covered with a very thin glass film that protects against deformation. The bass captivates with a pronounced attack, dense and collected pitch, the middle immerses in the richness of timbres with open and expressive reproduction of vocals and live instruments. For a better extension of the lower register, bass-reflex acoustic design with a port on the front panel was used in the cabinets.
A 25 mm aluminium-magnesium dome tweeter is responsible for high frequencies, making them bright and transparent.
Overall dynamics and clarity are decent for a driver of this caliber, with only a slight amount of compression heard at high volumes.
In a word, the Focal JMLab Aria 906 is undeniably good. And the sound is excellent, and the design, and there is magnetic shielding, and all this with a fairly compact size and weight. If only the price was lower...
