The German company Magnat Audio began its activity in 1973 with the production of car audio equipment: first subwoofers, then amplifiers. The company's engineers have many achievements to their credit: they created the most powerful subwoofer for consumer audio, were the first to design a wireless home theater system, and their Hi-End tube amplifiers won the first awards at prestigious international audio equipment exhibitions at the turn of the millennium.
Ease of design and customization
Subwoofer SUB 731F of the Quantum 750 series is the most massive model of the manufacturer, has dimensions of 34x56.8x45.2 cm and weight of 26.1 kg. Offered in three colour options (black, white and brown), the 35 mm thick MDF cabinet is internally reinforced with stiffeners. Two bass reflex holes are located on the rear panel and are implemented using Air Flex technology, which reduces air resistance to a minimum.
The subwoofer is mounted on four pillars, passing through a massive 45mm podium, designed to dampen excessive cabinet vibrations. The front panel and podium are covered with glossy piano lacquer, which brings some sophistication to the design of the speaker system, although it adds to the hassle in the fight against the soiling of glossy surfaces.
Sound
A 12-inch long-throw low-frequency tweeter with a performant voice coil and a ventilation system is placed inside the case, reproducing sound in the range of 18 – 200 Hz, as well as an amplifier with a nominal (RMS) power of 180 W and a peak of 360 W. All this provides the subwoofer with excellent macrodynamics, so it easily handles with sounding rooms up to 30 square metres. m. without any overload.
The sound of the system is rated with the highest score, the subwoofer perfectly solves the problem of both playing music with a pronounced rhythm section, as well as movies and video games replete with sound effects. In fairness, however, it is worth noting that the model gravitates slightly towards the theatrical style of performance. Bass peaks are crisp and clear, while more complex low-frequency transitions sound a bit washed out. Ideally, the subwoofer should be tuned to the lowest bass level, and used in a mix with satellites that have a well-implemented midrange and high-frequency component.
Variable connections
The subwoofer can be connected both according to the standard scheme (to the corresponding output of an external receiver) and to high-level outputs, which allows you to turn almost any x.0 speaker system into an x.1 system.
The AUTO STANDBY mode turns the device on and off depending on the input signal. If no signal is received, the subwoofer will go into standby mode, consuming as little as 1 watt per hour.
The Magnat Quantum Sub 731A is an excellent choice for lovers of sound carefully worked out at all frequency levels, which, however, will have to fork out a lot. The price of the subwoofer exceeds expectations.
