In the spring of 2021, the Taiwanese giant Asus introduced a new series of gaming laptops ROG Strix G15 based on AMD Ryzen processors. The “youngest” model with the most powerful 16-thread Ryzen 7 processor by laptop standards, an NVIDIA RTX 3050 graphics card and a fast 512 GB NVMe drive came to our tests. Looking ahead, we can’t help but note that Asus turned out to be an extremely good and versatile gaming laptop with an excellent display, powerful hardware and advanced equipment (Wi-Fi 6, USB-C with fast charging, Dolby Atmos speakers, etc.), which according to all the laws of the market, it should cost at least 200 – 300 dollars more.

Spectacular appearance and high-quality body assembly

Asus specialists did not radically update the design of the ROG Strix, but limited themselves to tuning. As in last year's models, multi-level RGB backlighting has become a visual feature, in which not only the keyboard, but also the case is highlighted (note: an RGB tape is built into the base). The body is traditionally assembled to the conscience, the parts are mostly plastic, the chassis is combined. The cooling system is also in perfect order and does not allow the laptop to boil even at peak load.

3 preset operating modes

To simplify the interaction with the laptop, Asus engineers have added 3 operating modes: quiet, performant and turbo. The former is better suited for browsing and simple tasks when you need to save battery power. The "turbo" mode, on the contrary, gives the maximum voltage to the processor and graphics card, giving out the possible maximum for this assembly. In this case, the battery charge will melt before our eyes, and the battery itself will rather play the role of a UPS. A similar trick was pulled with the display, allowing you to customize its colours using the ASUS Armory Crate software.

RAM storage can be increased

The only negative Asus ROG Strix G15 is the availability of RAM. Only one 8 GB stick is installed on board the test sample, and there are practically no sales with identical filling, but 16 GB. Rather, they are, but they are significantly more expensive, so it’s easier to add the necessary RAM module yourself. Fortunately, the motherboard has a second slot. As well as an additional M.2 connector for installing a second SSD. Whether you like it or not, the available 512 GB will fill up faster than you can sneeze.
