Saws: types, purpose and selection tipsA brief overview of different types of saws and sawing machines with tips on choosing the right tools
Model overview based on user reviews
The STIHL MS 260 38 chainsaw is highly regarded for its reliability and power, often compared to the durability of a Kalashnikov. Users appreciate its good power-to-weight ratio and ease of use, making it suitable for both professional and home use. It is noted for its long-lasting performance with proper maintenance, although some users have experienced issues with the air filter, which tends to clog quickly and is difficult to clean. The chainsaw is lightweight and starts easily, but spare parts can be expensive and hard to find. Despite its higher price, many users find it worth the investment due to its sturdy build and efficiency. However, some have reported issues with chain durability and minor operational quirks. Overall, the STIHL MS 260 38 is praised for its reliability and effectiveness in various cutting tasks.

Great machine

I've been using this saw for about 6-7 years, it's reliable. I'm involved in wooden house construction, so I have to saw almost every day, all day long. I've changed the bar twice, the spark plug, and the rear amortizer, chains not included. I clean the air filter regularly and periodically clean the whole saw. Before this, I had other saws like Husqvarna, which broke down after a year.
As reliable as an iron bridge, with proper maintenance.
Few places have spare parts in stock.

Better than 261, it seems to have a filter similar to the 660 and a 3/8 headset.
Good power/weight ratio.
For the price, they could have come up with a better air filter. It clogs quickly, is difficult to clean, and there's also a carburetor valve built in. The headset would be better at 3/8. Overall, the saw is very good, but the filterRRRR spoils everything.

I am not in a position to recommend the tool for professional work since I use it for pleasure and for small volumes of work. There's nothing to compare it to because I've only used the "Druzhba". I liked the tool and I get the enjoyment I expected from it. I think that it can last a very long time if handled carefully. If it weren't for those couple of drawbacks, see above, it would be absolutely great.
I bought it as an additive to the MS660 for working with thin wood and trimming branches. Comfortable in the hands, relatively powerful, moderate gas mileage and generally beautiful. I bought it for fun because the 660+260 is very expensive for the money, once a year I prepare firewood for three ZIL dump trucks and, of course, for housework.
Price, too opaque gasoline tank - difficult to estimate the remaining amount. It seemed rather weak at first, but after 10 liters of fuel it went away. When you press the gas there is a dip - it stalls and then picks up speed. When cutting with the upper part of the tire, some jerks are observed. Maybe there’s something wrong with the chain, I sharpened it incorrectly, but already on 2 chains from the new one it’s the same.
