Perfect size
Wireless speakers from Sonos have long been popular due to their powerful sound, ease of use and reasonable pricing. Recently, the company's speakers have become smarter, having acquired the Amazon Alexa voice assistant.
Externally, Sonos One copies the design of the miniature Sonos Play 1. It is larger than Google Home, but compact enough to fit into small spaces. To control basic functions, there is a touch panel on the top panel of the speaker, and along the perimeter of the case there are as many as 6 microphones for all interaction with the smart assistant. Therefore, you are unlikely to encounter communication problems.
Voice control of music
The Amazon Alexa assistant does not understand Russian, but this is mitigated by several factors. The first is that Sonos One is focused primarily on music, not smart home control, so the basic list of commands like “Play Spotify” or “Stop Music” is not that difficult to remember. And the speaker itself is very easy to configure using a proprietary smartphone application and instantly integrates into your home network.
The second point is that in 2019, Sonos began a beta test of speakers with support for Google Assistant and promises to add it to all models in the second half of 2019. So, this will be one of the few smart speakers with a couple of voice assistants to choose from.
Room sound calibration
Now about the sound, since this is the most interesting part. Sonos One is equipped with a pair of speakers (tweeter + woofer), each with a separate amplifier. Overall, the Sonos One is impressive in how good it sounds from such a modest size and speaker size - it's just some kind of elven magic. The bass here is much more powerful than you'd expect from compact speakers, but the mids really stand out, incredibly clear and velvety. Plus, using the Trueplay function in the mobile application, you can calibrate the speaker for the room - after spending a few minutes on this, you will hear noticeably better sound. Overall, this is one of the best wireless speakers for the money.
Build your system
An additional advantage is that the Sonos catalog has a whole set of multi-format speakers from which you can assemble a smart multiroom system for your own needs - scatter them across rooms or, conversely, connect them into a 2.0/2.1 system for listening to music or connecting to TV. If you already have smart wireless speakers that support AirPlay 2, then you can combine them with Sonos One into one system, simultaneously transmitting sound from your smartphone to both.
Against the backdrop of all this, we only note the strange decision to abandon Bluetooth; sometimes it can be a fast and convenient alternative to Wi-Fi.
