Ambilight backlight

The 50-inch model is among the entry-level 4K TVs in Philips' 2019 lineup. A neat appearance is emphasized by the signature 3-colour Ambilight backlight. So, the LEDs located on the sides and top of the rear surface of the case project a coloured halo in the tone of the content that is currently shown on the screen.

Clear and rich picture

Philips 50PUS6704 supports 3840x2160 pixel resolution and HDR technology (including the two leading standards HDR10+ and HLG), which will guarantee excellent detail, sharpness and saturation of the image when playing the corresponding content.

Due to the Micro Dimming function, the brightness of the picture is corrected taking into account the illumination of the room and has a positive effect on the contrast level. The high quality of blacks ensures that the entire colour gamut is displayed correctly, so that the various shades of the default are accurately reproduced: they look balanced and natural.

The acoustics of the TV is represented by a pair of 10-watt speakers with Dolby Atmos sound processing system.

"Smart" features

The multimedia functionality of the Philips 50PUS6704 is revealed by the relatively new (debuted in 2018) proprietary Saphi platform based on OS Linux. It, as expected, provides a built-in browser, supports DLNA and Miracast. The shell interface is quite convenient, although some features of the menu take some getting used to. At a minimum, the current versions of Saphi have less choice of applications available for installation than their counterparts. Although the most popular services, ranging from YouTube or Netflix to Megogo or Ivi, are available.

For wireless Internet access, the TV received a Wi-Fi 802.11n module. It will provide smooth streaming of FullHD video, but to avoid pauses for reloading 4K content, you should take care of the LAN connection.

All in all, the Philips 50PUS6704 is a relatively inexpensive 4K HDR TV that comes with a nice signature Ambilight feature.
