One of a kind

The Athlon X4 845 is the first and last desktop processor based on the Excavator architecture. This AMD development is widely used in Carizzo notebook processors, therefore it has a good balance of performance, power consumption and heating(as far as it is possible within the outdated 28nm process technology). But, unfortunately, the FM2 + desktop platform will not develop further - the Zen AM4 generation is coming.

Acceleration is automatic but not manual

Unlike the 860K and 880K models, the 845 has a locked multiplier, so there is no manual overclocking option. But automatic overclocking from 3.5 to 3.8 GHz is provided in case of load on only one or two cores. However, manual overclocking entails additional costs for a tower cooler, which is an unaffordable luxury when assembling an inexpensive and even mid-range PC.

Two by two is four

On a dual-core processor, many modern games either do not start at all (Dragon Age: Inqusition, Far Cry 4, Assassin's Creed Syndicate), or noticeably slow down (GTA V, Battlefield 4). Therefore, if you plan to play something harder than WoT, Dota and CS, you definitely need a quad-core processor. The most affordable quad-core is the Athlon X4 845 – only $70, which is comparable to the cost of a dual-core Intel Pentium.
