The Samsung BD-P1600 is an entry-level DVD/Blu-ray player, characterized by a very low cost compared to most similar devices. At the same time, the player has a wide range of functions that were previously available only on more expensive models.

BD-P1600 works with the main modern multimedia formats, and, in addition to reading from disks, is also capable of processing data from external media — hard drives or flash-memory.

The appearance of the player is quite strict and minimalistic. The front panel is closed with a dark transparent decorative cover that opens only the LCD display for viewing. In addition to it, under the cover there is a drive tray, a USB connector and control sensors, there are not many of them — “pause”, “stop”, “back and forth”, “disc ejection” and power management. Everything else is controlled from the remote control.

On the rear panel, in addition to the HDMI interface standard for modern technology, there is a fairly wide range of connectors — which is fully justified by the player's low-cost orientation, which implies its combination with relatively simple devices. There is also a second USB connector and an Ethernet port.

The standard remote control is multi-brand, and in addition to the player, it can also be used to control the main functions of most Samsung TVs. The remote control is made of glossy plastic and is quite sensitive to dirt.

The control menu interface is simple and clear even for an inexperienced user.

The BD-P1600 can be integrated into the proprietary Anynet+ system, which allows you to control all available Samsung media devices. In addition, the player is optimized to work with TVs of the same manufacturer, in particular, the function of automatic image adjustment is available for them. Although the device has a digital-to-analogue converter, the main option is to use the player with digital technology. In addition to disks and independent external drives, the player allows real-time broadcasting of data from a computer to a TV screen via Ethernet (local area network) or Wi-Fi. Network broadcasting is also supported, in particular from YouTube.

To play video in the usual DVD format, the device has a custom upscaler that increases the clarity of the picture — however, to the detriment of fine detail.

It is worth noting that there is evidence of the ability of the BD-P1600 to play MKV files (although 720p video may be stretched vertically), as well as to read data from DVD + R / RW, including dual-layer ones (although the instructions may be stated to the contrary). On the other hand, there may be problems with DivX or XviD video resolutions greater than 720x576. Also, the player does not provide fast forwarding for MP3 files.

The network capabilities of the BD-P1600, in addition to connecting to a computer, provide automatic firmware updates via the Internet, also via Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

The package includes a remote control and an HDMI cable — entry-level, so for the desired image quality, you may need to purchase a more advanced cable. Wi-Fi-adapter is not included in the kit, and it may be difficult to find it.

On the whole, the Samsung BD-P1600 is a rather successful model of a basic Blu-ray player, whose main advantage — low cost — is combined with a decent number of supported formats and external media, as well as modern network functions.
