If at work you have to constantly exchange tens of gigabytes of information, then models from the Portable series are an perfect replacement for outdated portable hard drives. Due to the absence of mechanical parts, solid state drives are much less susceptible to mechanical damage than conventional hard drives, they are much faster and at the same time not much more expensive. Plus, they are compact - the thickness of the average My Passport drive does not exceed 1 cm and weighs less than 50 – 60 g. And they look great. We can say that the visual division of the case into two halves, one of which is mirror-smooth, and the other with a wavy pattern, has become a signature feature of the series.

All of them are based on 3D TLC NAND memory and communicate using a USB-C port. In older models with a USB-C gen1 port, the data transfer rate was limited to 540 MB / s, in newer models, using a USB-C 3.2 gen2 interface allowed for higher speeds. For example, a 2020 My Passport drive can write and read data at speeds from 1000 Mbps to 1050 Mbps, effectively doubling its predecessors. This allows WD My Passport drives to quickly transfer and overwrite game distributions, RAW photo archives, and 4K video.

At the same time, the maximum volumes also increased: the old WD My Passport SSD models were limited to 2 TB of memory, while the volume of the new ones was expanded to 5 GB. All this goodness is spiced up with several important nuances that put My Passport drives above most mid-range SSDs. Firstly, all representatives of this series are equipped with proprietary automatic backup software, which, among other things, is friends with the Apple Time Machine utility for MacOS. Further, a mandatory attribute is 256-bit AES hardware encryption with a password and an official 5-year warranty from the manufacturer.
