Available 4-core processors based on the Zen 2 microarchitecture (Matisse core, 7nm). Designed for installation in motherboards with AMD AM4 processor socket and 300/400/500 series chipsets. Suitable for equipping multi-purpose home systems, simple entry-level workstations and low-cost gaming configurations. Unlike their predecessors (Ryzen 3 with Zen microarchitecture, Summit Ridge core, 14 nm manufacturing process), these CPUs support proprietary Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT) multi-threading technology, due to which each physical core is perceived by the operating system as two separate virtual ones. Thus, AMD Ryzen 3 Matisse processors show much higher performance in optimized multi-threaded applications (photorealistic rendering, video encoding and processing, code compilation, arc...hiving). In addition, architectural improvements and a more advanced workflow with 7nm standards have allowed higher clock speeds. Another innovation is support for the high-speed PCI-E Gen 4.0 system interface, available on boards with 500-series chipsets. A free multiplier will help to achieve the desired result for overclocking enthusiasts.

People's Choice

The AMD Ryzen 3 3100 is the most affordable processor on the latest Zen 2 architecture. With only four cores and eight SMT threads, it outperforms the six-core-twelve-thread Ryzen 5 1600AF in games. In addition, thanks to the modern 7-nanometer process technology, the Ryzen 3 3100 is much colder and at the stock frequency is able to cool quietly even with a small boxed cooler.

Simple overclocking

The base frequency of the Ryzen 3 3100 is 3.6 GHz, Precision Boost single-core is 3.9 GHz, and all-core is 3.8 GHz. But the unlocked multiplier allows you to easily overclock the processor on motherboards with the B450 chipset and higher to a frequency of 4.2 – 4.3 GHz. In the latter case, the Ryzen 3 3100 seemed to match the older 3300X at the same frequency, but that wasn't the case.

Architectural features

The fact is that the processor cores of the Ryzen 3 3100 are separated by two different CCX models inside one CCD chip, which complicates the process of information exchange between them and leads to a slight, but in no way removable, leftover from the 3300X with a single CCX module. However, the price difference between the 3100 and 3300X is quite noticeable, which gives both processors the right to exist.

Choosing an esportsman

If you need the highest and, most importantly, stable frame rate in the latest and most demanding games like Red Dead Redemption 2 and the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077, buy the older 3300X. If you are a fan of much less resource-intensive eSports games, such as CSGO or Dota 2, it would be wiser to save money on buying a younger 3100. By the way, another fresh AMD chip, Ryzen 3, has a similar number of Zen 2 cores and SMT threads (four to eight). PRO 4350G with Radeon Vega 6 graphics.
